When “Less is More” doesn’t work.

Story time.

Brad's lower back was hurting. Not all the time, though. Mainly with heavy deadlifting, and sometimes when he does heavy squatting.

He had approached this issue with the mindset that if it hurts, he should do less. Which, is a common (and sometimes warranted) approach.

Eventually, Brad reached out to me. After a few months of working together, we had Brad doing some sort of hinging (deadlifting) and squatting 2x per week.

Eventually, Brad was able to deadlift more than 1.5x his body weight for multiple reps without pain. That's because I had Brad doing MORE! ....more deadlifting, more hinging and more squatting.

Now, of course we had to do some work on the front end to help make is body more capable/resilient. Things like corrective exercises, stability work, mobility work and daily warm-ups.

But, the key thing to understand is that the answer to Brad's issue was doing M O R E of what caused him pain - not less.

You see, sometimes pain (and/or tightness, cramping, tingling, achy-ness) is a sign that your body cannot handle what you're asking it to do. That may be because of weakness, or lack of mobility, but it may be as simple as your tissues needing more practice, more exposure to that thing.

In Brad's case it was lifting heavy weight with his legs and low back. But, after finding the right place to start and fortifying the shit out of Brad's body, we got him back to being one strong (and Pain Free) SOB. 😎 💪🏼
